STAAR Support Plan

In Mesquite ISD, we believe that having access to information and knowing how to use that information effectively makes a difference in people's lives. We also believe that teaching is a form of intervention and that the key role of the school librarian centers on teaching. Reading and information literacy are the central areas of instruction for the school librarian. When we teach in the library, learning takes place that transforms our students' knowledge, skills, attitudes and values.

 

 

In an effort to make a connection between library instruction and student achievement, MISD librarians create a STAAR Support Plan each year.

 


 

The steps to creating the STAAR Support Plan are as follows:

 

Step 1. Analyze campus STAAR data with teachers and administrators.

 

Step 2. Brainstorm and think of all the lessons that could be taught in the library to address objectives needing improvement.

 

Step 3. Choose a team of teachers with which to work.

 

Step 4. Share your ideas for improving targeted TEKS/STAAR objectives through library instruction. Get input from your team.

 

Step 5. Work with your team to plan and schedule the lessons/unit that will address the targeted TEKS/STAAR objectives.

 

Step 6. Evaluate and gather the resources needed for the planned instruction.

 

Step 7. Develop a communication plan. Let other teachers and administrators on your campus know what you are doing in the library to help improve student achievement. Toot your own horn!

 

Step 8. Teach and assess the lessons/unit planned.

 

Step 9. Analyze STAAR data to see if student scores have improved.
